GENRE RESEARCH

My chosen genre - horror

Genre - A category or 'type' within a medium (e.g. in the medium of film, horror is a genre). Genre is important for both the media producers and the consumers. Consumers can decide whether they desire to consume and media producers can create a media text for a particular audience.

My chosen genre which is horror has an overall purpose to frighten, scare and shock the audience. These feelings are crucial to be obtained as it is the genre’s main objective.

What are the characteristics of horror films?

It is crucial that there is more action than dialogue as the need of generating a feeling of alarm and intense fear is extremely necessary.

Building up suspense and uncertainty to then break it down if desired and if seen the need to do so with the overall intention of taking the viewers by surprise.

Abrupt images happening suddenly and unexpectedly to startle and confuse the viewer.

Fear, surprise, suspense, mystery and spoilers are key

Horror is a film genre that’s scary for the purpose of entertainment

Boy In the Striped Pajamas

FILM ANALYSIS

The boy in the striped pyjama is a horror film set in World War II directed by Mark Herman. The introduction gives a brief summary of how perfect the life of the main character, Bruno, is at that time and a small warning of how it can change drastically later in the film.

Don't Breathe

FILM ANALYSIS

Don't breathe is a horror-thriller film produced and directed by Fede Alvarez. The opening scenes gives the audience an idea of what will happen later in the film and as the characters appear robbing a house right after, that gives us a theory of how and why it will occur.

Verónica

FILM ANALYSIS

Veronica is a Spanish supernatural horror film directed by Paco Plaza. Once again, the opening scenes gives the audience an idea of what will happen later in the film but it doesn’t give the audience any clue why this will happen.
