Codes and conventions for slow R&B/Soul music videos:

Females and males; In slow R&B/Soul music videos actors give an impression of perfection and that is why make-up and clothes of actors are very natural and nude so that a sense of natural beauty can be conveyed. They could maybe make use of accesories such as jewlery.

Narrative/Performance; Slow R&B/Soul music videos are usually about love and break ups. When the narrative is about love, the artist tends to be solitary in a bedroom or in calm places that do not involve many people around and the amounts of objects in the setting is minimal. The audience could maybe be able to relate to such a situation.

Camerawork; Shots will be of a long and slow duration to match the tempo of the song. However, the camerawork tends to change, and when it is about love many close up shots are involved during music videos in order to be able to convey the feelings.

Lighting; The lighting is usually very soft and natural to show a sense of reality. It is ocassionaly high key with a black and white/greyscale or sepia tone filter on top to create a soft tone to video and therefore creating sensual emotions. However, the sense of sensuality can change if the brightness turns to a more low key grey to increase and create a more dreamy feel to it and then if the grey falls more into the dark side, this could then create a sense of darkness (emotionally) in the narrative or power in the actor/actress in the video.

Editing; The way most R&B/Soul music videos is in a way it can create a reality between the audience and the artist. To create a sense of reality, the artist can become ivolved in the narrative.

Costume; constumes in slow R&B/Soul music videos can be very simple. examples include a plain t-shirt and jeans.

Targeted mainly for younger generations as it tells the story of a young couple.

Chamber Pop:
Chamber pop is a music genre that combines rock and pop music with orchestral instruments such as piano, strings and vocal harmonies.
A lot chamber pop songs take strong inspiration from the 1960s artists such as 'The Beatles', who consciously incorporated orchestral instruments into contemporary pop songs.
Main Characteristic:
Combination of rock instruments and orchestral instruments. In the case of 'To Build a Home', chamber pop genre is mixed with dance/electronic.

A music video is the perfect example of media convergence. Media Convergence refers to the merging of different types of mass media such as traditional media, print media, broadcast media, new media and the internet as well as portable and highly interactive technologies through digital media platforms. In other words, convergence is the combination of two previously separate industries. Examples of media industries include films, TV and music. To watch a movie you normally go to the cinema, you traditionally must purchase a record to listen to music and in order to watch television you should even have to buy a Tv first and then choose a channel. All these industries are now completely linked together as you can now use your phone or laptop to watch a film whilst you listen to music for example. This process is called digital convergence, as two seperate media industries come together thanks to digital technology.

Types of music videos:
There are 5 main types of music videos which are performance, narrative, lyrics, concept and animated.

1) Performance music videos-
Performance based music videos consist of a band or artist performing to the camera. This is usually the most frenquently used music video as it is the oldest type. It may include lip-syncing, dancing or even playing instrument. The objective of this is to focus on the artists. Most old music videos are performance-based as can be done on a low budget and is easy to film.

2) Narrative music videos-

A narrative-based music videos is one in which the artist ir artists try to communicate a story. Narrative music videos, like short films, contain a series of shots designed to tell a story. Some feature a short artist performance,some feature the artist acting rather than performing, and some don't feature the artist at all.A narrative music video can consist of a beginning, middle, and end.

When creating a music video, there can be various narrative methods that can be used. Some videos are mirror exactly the meaning of the lyrics, whilst other music videos are created with no relationship with the songs lyrics and instead decide to contruct a new and different meaning. Sometime even, it both of this ways are used where they construct a new theme through the video but are still related to the lyrics. These techniques are illustration, disjuncture and amplification.

3) Concept music videos-

Concept music videos are videos that have no relation with the lyrics and have no storyline. It is mostly based on the artist's perception. The videos don't usually have a structure and they frequently contain a narrative or a performance. Concept music videos tend to be very unique and that is why the viewers don't normally forget the videos as they will commonly be unusual and fascinating at the same time.

4) Lyrics music videos-

Lyric music videos are those in which the words to the song are the principal element, as it consists of showing the lyrics on screen as the song goes along. Instead of seeing the band play the song or stories, we see the lyrics in the music video. It is suitable for all genres and has been used by many well-know artists such as Katy Perry. The music video may include different fonts and colors depending on what goes best, and the words can be even animated maybe and moving around across the screen.
